I can understand it by Bobby Womack (1972)

Mar 5, 2022

Village Discount Outlet (Chicago based thrift store chain) always has something interesting playing on the in-store sound system between ads and shopper updates. I was wandering around the aisles of the Andersonville branch this week when I heard Bobby Womack's cover of Sweet Caroline pop on, and having never heard it before, I was inspired to check out the album it was originally released on (Understanding, 1972) when I got home later.

That's when I found this emotional, kind of proto-disco track. Classic example of Bobby's ripping vocals, and I love how the main verse beat substitutes the snare on the 2s and 4s with a loud high-hat. Fun stuff! πŸ•ΊπŸ»

Some more jams

Waste Away by Julia Blair (2022)

Julia Blair's excellent debut album came out last week. Gorgeous strings on this track.

Butterfly Kisses by Bob Carlisle (2005)

Another random track that came on the VD sound system. It's a bad song, but I felt like I had to share here because of how strongly it impacted me. This song is so sickly sweet, guaranteed to make you cringe deeply.

What it feels like for a girl by Madonna (2000)

Happy Women's History Month. Heard this one recently, and it's now probably my fave Madonna track.

Context for this week's jam

Chicago weather: Cloudy. High 66F. Winds S at 15 to 25 mph. Higher wind gusts possible.
